Why Should We Believe the Bible?
This is a very valid and vital question and one that demands a reasonable answer. There are many reasons to firstly, believe in God and more specifically, to believe in the God described in the Bible. In this section we focus on some general reasons for beleiveing in God and then we move on to specific belief in the Bible in its claim to be the inspired Word of God.
THE COSMOLOGICAL ARGUMENT
This is the argument of universal causation – simply, Cause and Effect.
- Everything that begins to exist has a cause
- The universe (inclusive of material, time and space) began to exist
- Therefore the universe has a cause
- The cause must by necessity be uncaused – i.e. must exist outside of the universe itself because the universe had a beginning
- The cause must be eternal and of immeasurable power (beyond our finite, limited, natural capacity)
The cause is GOD – the God of the Bible is described as eternal, immaterial (Spirit), trascendent and of immeasurable power.
Psalm 147:5
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.
Jeremiah 32:17
Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee
Isaiah 57:15
For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Hebrews 9:14
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Psalm 139:7-12
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
THE DESIGN ARGUMENT
This is also known as the TELEOLOGICAL ARGUMENT. Design involves order and distinct order implies intelligence and intelligence requires a mind – a designer
- All designs imply a designer
- There is overwhelming evidence of great design in the universe
- Therefore, there must be a great Designer of the universe
Asdvanced discoveries like that of DNA, coupled with information theory provides proof of a designer…
- Information codes and language systems are only known to originate from an intelligent source (they don’t just happen by accident or blind chance)
- Within DNA can be found an incredibly complex and precisely ordered information code
- Therefore, this information code had to have come from an intelligent source
- Considering the complexity and precision of the DNA code, the intelligent source for DNA must be a super-intelligence
- The only intelligence capable of producing DNA is God, who has infinite knowledge, wisdom and capability.
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Isaiah 45:18
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
FINE TUNING OF THE UNIVERSE
Similar to the DESIGN ARGUMENT, the presence of precise and finely-tuned CONSTANTS in the universe, without which life could not exist, demonstrates deliberate and careful design. Again, the presence of such intelligent design for life implies an intelligent designer.
Arno Penzias (Nobel prize in physics):
“Astronomy leads us to a unique event, a universe which was created out of nothing, one with the very delicate balance needed to provide exactly the conditions required to permit life, and one which has an underlying (one might say ‘supernatural’) plan.”
Sir James Jeans (British physicist and astronomer)
“The universe begins to look more like a great thought than a great machine.
… From the intrinsic evidence of his creation, the Great Architect of the Universe now begins to appear as a pure mathematician.”
LOGIC & PURPOSE
Our ability to exercise logic is a prime reason to believe in God. The universe and all that is contained in the universe simply cannot have hapenned by accident – that would defy all logic. Instinctively, we know that everything has a REASON and a PURPOSE.
BIBLE PROPHECY
Only an OMNISCIENT (all-knowing) God can accurately, consistently and specifically declare the future before it happens. Bible Prophecy is just that – God declaring THE END FROM THE BEGINNING.
We read in Isaiah 46:9-10…
Remember the former things of old: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else; [I am] God, and [there is] none like me,
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
No other claimed “holy book” can do this – it is absolutely unique to the Bible and a compelling proof that the Bible is what it calims to be – The INSPIRED WORD OF GOD (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Perhaps the ultimate, definitive reason to believe in God is that of personal experience. The God of the Bible is not only Omniscient, Omnipresent and Omnipotent; He created mankind (male and female) in His image…
Genesis 1:27 WE ARE CREATED IN GOD’S IMAGE
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
He created mankind to share in a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with himself . The Bible reveals that this relationship is established through the SPIRITof GOD – the HOLY SPIRIT. Indeed, the Bible reveals that God is a SPIRIT and He must be worshipped IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH. He offers us to become indwelt by HIS SPIRIT.
John 4:24 GOD IS SPIRIT
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
John 14:21, 23 GOD WANTS TO MANIFEST HIMSLEF TO US – TO MAKE HIS ABODE WITH US
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him … if a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
ORDER v CHAOS
The maintenance of life relies on the existence of ORDER. We know from the existence of physical laws that order is necessary for life. When order breaks down, the result is chaos and eventual death and destruction. The Bible describes the Creator God as the God of Order. This is exemplified in the Genesis account of Creation where we see a definite order …
- in the beginning – God started creation out of nothing
- the first day – light was created (necessary to support all life)
- the second day – the sky was created (establishing the atmosphere to support life)
- the third day – dry land, seas, plants and trees were created (land preceeding plants and trees)
- the fourth day – the Sun, Moon and stars were created (celestial bodies to regulate times and seasons)
- the fifth day – creatures that live in the sea and creatures that fly were created (aquatic and avian creatures)
- the sixth day – animals that live on the land and finally humans, made in the image of God were created (land animals and humans as the top order – in the image of God)
- by day seven – God finished his work of creation, making the seventh day (time period) special.
We note that the word translated as “day” [from the Hebrew word יוֹם yowm n-m. (Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary) H3117] can also be translated as an indefinite period of time, so in the creation account, it may refer to an epoch or era.
THE MORAL ARGUMENT
- Moral Laws require a Moral Law Giver
- There is an objective moral law
- Therefore, there is a Moral Law Giver.
The establishment of moral decency and order requires ultimate authority – a standard that makind can refer to. This is the very bedrock of society, without which we descend into a state of anarchy. Law and order is a basic requirement for the protection of life and the individual. We needa law giver – moral law and decency is not inherent – it must be taught – the difference between right and worng – good and evil.
The ten commandments provide a brief summary of the laws of God. These have never been bettered by any alternatives offered by men.
